Hola! I'm Janet Biaggi Avanto and I was born in Lima on March 4, 1978. For six years I studied law at the Universidad de Lima, then worked in the Congreso de la Republica for almost two years. Then I moved to Cuzco because I was working on my master's degree and I needed to do some fieldwork. It was there that I began to learn the handicrafts of the women there. I loved them – they are wonderful! After a year there, I had to return to Lima but I was already beginning to create my own designs.
"More than anything, I'd describe my work as a social one, because I work with a large group of artisans. I help with the development of their communities and together we fuse our ideas. We select the best of these options to craft. It motivates me to see that they are realizing their dreams, and hand in hand we work hard to get ahead with every family.
"I try to transmit the tradition of popular art in combination with today's trends. I've exhibited my designs in Peru as well as in Romania, Los Angeles and Miami, and I'm very proud of this.
"My greatest challenge has been to leave my profession behind and dedicate myself to handicrafts.
"I'd like to tell Novica shoppers that by choosing my designs, you are contributing to the community development of Peru's artisans."
