Wayan Sorni graduated from SMEA (high school, majoring in Economics) in 1991, and she promptly began her apprenticeship at a relative's workshop in a neighboring village. For four years, Sorni learned all she could about the textile world, including designing and sewing a variety of garments.
When she married, her husband coaxed her into venturing on her own and set up her own workshop. Her husband had always admired her ability to design, and the range of textile products she would sew equally fascinated him. Family and relatives echoed her husband's suggestion, and in 1995 she opened her workshop.
The support she got from family and relatives went beyond mere encouragement. They joined her and helped her with the laborious batik prints. Orders began to fill in, and soon most members in her family began to take home their own income.
"Sewing makes me happy," confides Sorni. "Plus, to see my family benefiting from this makes me even happier. I really appreciate what Novica is doing to promote Balinese artists, so I am very hopeful this new relationship will bring us good luck!"
