Textile and fashion designer Verena Mostyn is a resident artist in Bali. Born in Antibes, France, she holds a master's degree from London's Royal College of Art. She has worked with artists in remote communities for the last decade, and set up a fabric printing and textile design studio in Zimbabwe on a grant from the Zimbabwean government. Her studio became a model for vocational self-help training for textiles, which artists used to set up their own cottage industries and then sold their products all over the world.
Her artwork and her prints are inspired by the beauty and harmony of nature around her, the healing power of color, and the craft process itself that all combine in her unique clothing designs.
While in Bali, Verena has worked with many textile craftspeople to explore their craft as artists, and has taught them new ways of using colors and applying the paints and dyes to the fabrics. She also collaborates with Ketut, a talented Balinese batik artist, and works with him in his studio.
Mostyn is motivated to keep the textile craft in Bali alive. She does this by creating new clothing collections each year that incorporate the hand crafted aspects of the garment. Her white cotton Gypsy Collection has elaborate and elegant lace inserts, ruffles and lace trim edgings. Her batik Gypsy Collection features hand painted batik cotton voiles. The sarongs and kimonos also use batik on rayon and silk.
All are made with love from Bali.
